CAMBRIDGE, Neb. --

A $13.2 million bond is going out to families within the Cambridge Public School district.

The board of education, described to News Channel Nebraska as a good representation of balance throughout the community, chose to move forward with the bond vote after looking into it over the last 18 months.

The board says there are glaring needs throughout the current facility, with the most recent addition coming in 1991; this, being the new gym.

The original estimate came in at $23.6 million and administrators were looking for ways to lower the price.

They tell NCN they believe the best and most cost-effective option is to tear down the two-story building from 1926, and replace it with a one-story building with classrooms.

The demolition would wipe out the old auditorium and a new one is planned for construction as part of this bond.

While doing this, the district also plans to hold on to some nostalgia and keep the original archway from the front entrance on the south, and move it to the east side of the academic building as a nod to the rich tradition of Cambridge schools.

Mail-in ballots are going out on July 21 and they are due back by 6 p.m. the night of August 12.
