GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A mobile home caught fire Monday afternoon in southwest Grand Island.

The call came in shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday for a structure fire in the 300 block of Cardinal Dr.

At around 4:45, fire departments saw the home fully engulfed with fire showing as they were arriving on the scene.

An initial communication on scanner traffic had reports of an infant dealing with smoke inhalation, and those concerns were unfounded.

After about 10 minutes, firefighters got the flames out and began searching for a dog, who was found inside the home.

The pet went to the vet, although Battalion Chief Scott Kuehl tells NCN he witnessed the pup walking around with the owner and the K9 appeared to be in good health.

The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.

The home is expected to be a total loss with an undisclosed amount of personal property damage.

The people who lived there are being assisted by Red Cross for a temporary place to stay and with other basic amenities.
