CRAWFORD, NE — A wildfire burning in the northwestern Nebraska panhandle continues to rage. 

According to a Saturday night update from Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands, the Post Fire has burned 5,544 acres. Containment remains at zero percent. Currently 23 organizations are working to bring the flames under control. 

Saturday, forces focused on the northern side of the fire to combat winds coming out of the south. Officials say they hope to see containment numbers increase within the next 24-48 hours.

The fire is burning about five miles south of Crawford. Evacuations are currently recommended for an area south of Four Mile Rd., north of Soester Rd., west of Highway 71 and east of Deep Creek Rd. 

Portions of Fort Robinson State Park and the town of Crawford south of Paddock St. are under a pre-evacuation notice. This means no evacuation has been issued, but residents should be ready in case one is. Only law enforcement can authorize an evacuation. 

Officials wish to thank every one who has given their support. Firefighters working the fire have received donations of food, water, money, equipment and other goods. 

Others have also volunteered time to cook for the crews and take on other tasks to keep operations running.
