GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Police in Grand Island responded Tuesday afternoon after a resident reported a suspicious device inside a mailbox in the 4300 block of Sherwood Road.
According to the Grand Island Police Department, officers were dispatched around 1:40 p.m. after the resident noticed an unusual item in the mailbox and provided a photo to officers. After reviewing the image, police determined the device appeared suspicious and took additional safety precautions.
Officers first deployed a drone to get a closer look at the device. The Nebraska State Patrol was then contacted, and a bomb technician was requested to assist.
When the technician arrived, a robot was used in an attempt to retrieve the device, but it was unable to grasp the item. The technician then placed the device in a protective containment box and transported it to a predetermined safe location for further examination.
Authorities cleared the scene around 3:40 p.m., and police said the investigation remains ongoing. Preliminary results from the investigation could be available as soon as Wednesday.
Officials say anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Grand Island Police Department.
