Monday marked Day 31 of the session, bringing us to the halfway point. Full-day floor debate is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 3.

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of welcoming the Sidney City Council to the Capitol and recognizing their work on the legislative floor. Engaging with constituents in Lincoln is always a valuable reminder of the impact our decisions have on local communities. During the Nebraska Optometric Association

Luncheon, I had the opportunity to connect with Dr. Shelby Rookstool of Sidney Vision Clinic. I greatly appreciate the dedication of our optometrists in providing quality eye care across the state.

On Wednesday, I spoke at the Nebraska Chamber Forum alongside Senator Prokop. Our discussion focused on bipartisan collaboration, stressing the importance of working together across party lines to advance policies that benefit the entire state. A significant portion of the conversation centered on the state budget. Nebraska began the session facing a budget shortfall, and while progress has been made, additional gaps are expected. I highlighted concerns about declining individual and corporate income tax receipts, as well as the need for structural reform. With cost of living as a top concern among residents,

caution was urged against overreliance on sales tax increases or fees, which could hinder long-term competitiveness. Key themes included fiscal responsibility, economic growth, workforce development, healthcare sustainability, and thoughtful long-term policymaking to secure Nebraska’s future.

As the session moves forward, the Appropriations Committee is expected to finalize its budget recommendations by Friday, following the Economic Forecasting Board meeting earlier that morning. With Day 40 rapidly approaching, these recommendations must be placed on General File, and by

Day 50 of the 60-day session, the proposal must be approved by the full legislative body.

As always, I appreciate your continued engagement on these important topics. If you have any feedback or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your input is invaluable in shaping the future of our district and state. You can contact my office at (402) 471-2616 or by email at [email protected]
