District finals set for area boys teams

Ogallala, Bridgeport, Kimball, Potter-Dix and Leyton will play Saturday and Monday with state tournament berths on the line.

SIDNEY, Neb. — District final matchups are set for several area boys basketball teams this weekend and Monday, with trips to the Nebraska School Activities Association state tournament on the line.

In Class C1-1, top-ranked Ogallala will host Columbus Lakeview at 2 p.m. MT Saturday in Ogallala. The Indians improved to 25-0 after a dominant 85-44 win over Bridgeport in the C1-10 tournament championship Thursday at Prairie View School. Ogallala outscored the Bulldogs 32-12 in the second quarter and built a 74-34 lead by the end of the third to trigger a running clock.

Sawyer Smith scored 25 points and Tanner Decastro added 23 in the win, while Cy Lowery and Edan Cain also finished in double figures. The Indians forced 19 turnovers and committed just eight.

Bridgeport, now 23-5, will also host a district final. The Bulldogs welcome Lincoln Christian at 1 p.m. MT Saturday in Class C1-5. The game will air on 987 The Big Boy.

In Class C2-6, Kimball will host Pender at 5 p.m. MT Monday. The Longhorns fell 69-66 to Valentine in the C2-10 subdistrict championship Thursday but earned a district final berth via wildcard points. The game will be broadcast on 104.3 KIMB.

Potter-Dix advanced to the Class D2-1 district final and will face Elgin Public/Pope John at 3 p.m. CT Saturday in Elgin. The Coyotes secured a 43-39 win over Bayard in the D2-11 subdistrict championship, led by Callen McConnell’s 26 points, six rebounds and five steals. The district final will air on 104.3 KIMB.

Leyton will travel to face Falls City Sacred Heart at 5 p.m. CT Monday in the Class D2-8 district final at the Roh Activity Center. The Warriors advanced with a 45-43 win over Garden County in the D2-10 subdistrict championship, surviving a late rally and a final buzzer attempt. Austin Beutler scored 19 points and Colt Van Anne added 15 in the victory. The game will be carried on 987 The Big Boy.

Winners of each district final will advance to the state tournament March 11-14 in Lincoln.
