KEARNEY, Neb.— In only its third year of offering girls wrestling, Kearney High is taking down competition with some successful returning athletes.

Despite only starting to offer the sport in 2023-24 school year, the Bearcats have 42 girls out and the team is currently ranked third in Class A.

Senior Sawyer Swarm attributes the success to the experience of those in the wrestling room every day.

"We have a lot of seniors... and we also have some tough JV, underclassmen coming in, so that makes the practice room tougher every week. That helps us every week in tournaments, too," Sawyer Swarm said.

This year, the Kearney High girls have 12 seniors.

Senior Carsyn McBride is currently undefeated this season, and looking to place on the podium at state once again.

"The top goal is definitely finish the season undefeated. I've made a bet with one of the coaches that, if I do, he buys everyone dinner," McBride said.

Head Coach Trey Schlender notes all should keep an eye on the returners and previous state qualifiers who are looking to make a run at the state tournament.

"I think we're going to prove a point this year and be able to showcase our talent," Schlender said.

A week ago, Kearney High wrestling was selected for FloWrestling’s national video series for its Stage Dual rivalry against Grand Island and the event was televised on News Channel Nebraska.

The Bearcats head to North Platte next week for a dual.
