KEARNEY, Neb. — The Kearney Police Department has promoted two officers to the rank of sergeant.

Officer Derrick Hosick and Officer Austin Hibberd were selected following a competitive four-step civil service process after lieutenant promotions created openings. Both sergeants will serve in the Uniform Patrol Bureau.

Hosick joined KPD in 2023 after serving with the Beatrice Police Department. His experience includes SWAT, K-9 handling, motor patrol, drone operations and leadership roles.

Hibberd has served with KPD since 2019 and previously worked with the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office. His roles include field training officer, firearms instructor and ESU team leader. He was named the Police Officer Association of Nebraska’s 2025 Officer of the Year.

An official promotion ceremony and badge pinning will take place during the Kearney City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 13.
