FAIRBURY, Neb -- The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents can safely dispose of unneeded or expired prescription medications at the lobby of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Fairbury. The event offers a free and anonymous way to prevent unused medicines from ending up in the wrong hands.

“This program gives our community a simple and responsible way to get rid of unneeded medications,” said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office officials. “Proper disposal helps prevent drug misuse and protects our environment.”

For more than a decade, Take Back Day has helped Americans clear out their medicine cabinets and reduce the risk of prescription drug abuse. Nationwide, the initiative has collected more than 9,600 tons of medication since its start.

The collection site will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. However, syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs will not be accepted. Liquid medications, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original containers with tightly closed caps to prevent leaks.

“Unused prescriptions can become a gateway to addiction,” the DEA said in a statement. “Events like this one make a real difference in keeping communities safe.”
