Blizzard Warnings, Winter Storm Warnings issued ahead of major snow storm
KEARNEY, Neb. — Forecasters say heavy snow could create blizzard conditions in parts of Nebraska on Sunday.
The National Weather Service issued a Blizzard Warning for six southeast Nebraska counties along the Kansas line. The warning runs from 3:00 a.m. Sunday through midnight. 12 other counties are in a Winter Storm Warning and almost every other county in the state is in a Winter Weather Advisory.
The NWS warns that freezing drizzle will gradually transition to snow Saturday night between 7:00-11:00. Heavy snow will fall overnight and into Sunday morning. Wind gusts of 25-35 mph could cause poor visibility all of Sunday.
Forecasters predict that Hebron, in Thayer County, will get 12-18 inches of snow. Other parts of the blizzard warned areas could also see a foot of snow. Snow totals taper off the further north and west you go.
In addition to the snow, the NWS expects Nebraskans to encounter dangerous wind chills. Parts of Central Nebraska could see wind chill values as low as -13 on Sunday morning. Aside from Monday afternoon, wind chill values are expected to stay below zero until Wednesday afternoon.
While Nebraska is expected to see a major impact from this storm, the worst is predicted to hit to the state’s south. The NWS says this winter storm could be a once-every-few-years type of event in northern Kansas.
