KEARNEY, Neb. — The Kearney Public Schools Board of Education will soon begin accepting applications to fill a vacant post on the board.

The school board held a special meeting Monday night and accepted the resignation of board member Dave Brandt, who is resigning to become a science teacher at Kearney High. He had served on the board since January 2021.

According to a news release, the district will post an application to its website on January 31. The application must be turned in by noon on Feb. 14. The board will then vet candidates and set interviews for Feb. 19 and 20. The board will swear in the new member on Feb. 21.

The new board member will serve the remainder of Brandt’s term, which lasts through the end of 2024.

The board is switching around responsibilities in Brandt’s absence.  Kathy Gifford is the new board secretary and member of the Committee on American Civics. Steve Gaasch will take over Brandt's responsibilities on the KPS Foundation Board. The Personnel Committee will now include Drew Blessing, Paul Hazard, and Steve Gaasch.
