HASTINGS, Neb. — Hundreds of people filed into the Adams County Fairgrounds for the annual Kiwanis Pancake Feed in an effort to raise money for a renovated skate park in Hastings.
Kiwanis Hastings hosted its 74th Pancake Day as residents filled the fairgrounds for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The funds generated are going towards a $500,000 renovation to bring the skate park in Hastings back to life. Kathy Schultz from Kiwanis said the effort to restore the skate park has been ongoing, but recently hit a wall in funding.
"They really didn't have the money so it kind of got pushed back. So we said if we can help you raise money, can we get this going? It was a big decision. We kind of sweated about that. We said we'll try to raise $200,000 and then the city will put up the rest of it."
Going into the fundraiser, Kiwanis has raised around $173,000 of its pledge. Construction is expected to begin in the fall.
