GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Four children are now in state custody after a child abuse investigation in Grand Island.

Grand Island Police say officers were called to an apartment complex on the east side of town for a child abuse tip on Tuesday night. A news release says officers smelled a foul odor coming from Daniel Fontaine, Amanda Wolfe and their apartment. Officers searched the home and found four children living in what they deemed as unsanitary and unsafe condition.

A news release says the children were confined in car seats, strollers or play pens in an unsafe environment that caused diaper rashes, sores or bug bites. Police believe the children were deprived of food, clothing and care.

The release says Fontaine and Wolf had been contacted by police and the Department of Health and Human Services previously. The children are in a 48-hour hold with DHHS.

Police say Fontaine made threats, attempted to interfere with the investigation and kicked the police vehicle. He and Wolfe were arrested on four counts of intentional child abuse. Fontaine also faces two counts of resisting arrest and one count of obstructing an officer.
