HASTINGS, NE — The National Weather Service is warning of extreme heat over the weekend and into Monday.

The NWS Hastings Office has issued a Heat Advisory for its entire coverage area lasting from noon on Saturday to 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Forecasters warn of heat index values peaking between 100-105 degrees during the afternoon hours. Fortunately, experts expect breezy south winds blowing at 15-25 mph to provide mild relief.

The NWS says cumulative effects of multiple days of hot/humid conditions will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses for people and animals. Officials encourage people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Chances for severe weather return on Monday night and Tuesday.
