Blue Hill man sentenced on gun charges in federal court

A 36-year-old Blue Hill man was sentenced in federal court on Tuesday.

OMAHA, Neb. -- A 36-year-old Blue Hill man was sentenced in federal court on Tuesday.

United States Attorney Jan Sharp announced that Amos J. Mosel was sentenced on the charge of Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. sentenced Mosel to 35 months’ imprisonment, to be served consecutively to a prior state sentence Mosel is currently serving at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. There is no parole in the federal system. After his release from prison, Mosel will begin a three-year term of supervised release.

On August 20, 2021, Mosel went into Good Guys Gun and Pawn in Omaha and sold a Remington 700 300 WIN rifle for $600. Mosel provided his identification and was photographed while pawning the gun. The firearm was later determined to be stolen.

On August 25, 2021, investigators executed a search warrant at Mosel's residence in Blue Hill. Mosel was located in the garage where four more firearms were found and seized: a Model 59 Western Field .22 caliber rifle, a Stevens Model 325A 30-30 caliber rifle, a Remington Sportsman 12-gauge shotgun, and a North American Arms .22 mag Derringer Pistol. All of the firearms had been stolen from a neighbor.

Mosel has been convicted of multiple felony offenses in several Nebraska counties. Among his prior felonies are Theft by Receiving Stolen Property and Burglary in the District Court of Holt County, Nebraska, on May 7, 2019; Forgery in the 1st Degree in the District Court of Hall County, Nebraska, on June 27, 2018; and Theft by Deception in the District Court of Lancaster County, Nebraska, on December 4, 2018.

The case was investigated by the Hastings Police Department, the Omaha Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
