IMPERIAL - Freezing rain began falling in eastern Colorado, northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska Friday afternoon, as a winter storm system pushes its way towards Interstate 80 in Nebraska.

Snow was beginning to accumulate from Chappell to North Platte.

A strong winter storm is expected to impact the region with two rounds of wintry weather, according to the National Weather Service in North Platte. Light freezing rain and a wintry mix of precipitation will continue Friday night. As temperatures cool Saturday, snow will develop and may become heavy at times, especially over north-central Nebraska.

Total snow accumulations of three to six inches and ice accumulations of one tenth to two tenths of an inch are forecast.

Strong gusty winds will begin Saturday night and last into Sunday, producing areas of blowing and drifting snow. This could produce near whiteout conditions.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for two-thirds of Nebraska, eastern Wyoming and northeast Colorado. The warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. Sunday.

The weather service says to plan on slippery roads. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
