Officials address flare-ups, ash reports within Morrill Fire perimeter amid Red Flag conditions

Crews are responding to flare-ups inside the Morrill Fire perimeter, but officials say much of what people are seeing is ash, not new fire growth. Authorities ask the public to only call 911 for immediate threats.

GARDEN COUNTY, Neb. — Fire crews continue responding to flare-ups within the perimeter of the Morrill Fire as strong winds and critical fire weather conditions impact western Nebraska.

Officials told News Channel Nebraska that each flare-up is being handled on a case-by-case basis, with the primary goal of preventing the fire from expanding beyond its established perimeter.

The Morrill Fire has burned more than 643,360 acres across Morrill, Garden, Keith, Arthur and Grant counties and is currently 18% contained.

Fire managers said no new fires have been reported outside the perimeter as of Tuesday.

However, the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1 said 911 centers have received multiple calls reporting smoke in the area. In many cases, officials say what people are seeing is ash being lifted into the air by strong winds, not active fire.

“Expect to see smoke today as winds increase,” the team said in a public update. “Interior flare-ups can occur deep within the fire’s footprint, even in areas that have already burned. This is normal and does not necessarily indicate new fire growth.”

Officials said gusty winds in the Red Flag Warning area are contributing to increased smoke and ash in the air, which may reduce visibility and raise concerns among residents.

A witness reported seeing a flare-up near the Tipton Ranch north of Lewellen, which remains inside the fire perimeter.

Fire managers emphasized that crews are actively monitoring conditions and responding to flare-ups as needed.

They are also asking the public to avoid calling 911 unless there is an immediate threat.

“If you see a distinct column of smoke or flames, please report it,” officials said. “Otherwise, conditions like this can be expected with today’s winds and ongoing fire activity.”

Officials continue to urge residents to stay clear of fire areas and allow emergency crews to operate safely as suppression efforts continue.
