GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Horse racing returns to central Nebraska this weekend as Fonner Park opens its 2026 season, bringing fans back for another year of racing along with several facility upgrades aimed at improving the overall experience. Track officials say planning for the season begins well before opening day. “Preparation for the 2026 racing season actually begins in 2025,” a Fonner Park official said. “I’m always thinking about what we can do better next year.” Fans attending opening weekend will notice several changes. Fonner Park installed a 29-foot outdoor LED video board, replaced older televisions with more than 100 high-definition screens throughout the facility, and expanded seating in the Skyline area, which now includes additional pub-style tables and post-race entertainment. Officials say the focus extends beyond wagering to creating a welcoming environment for families and casual fans. “The excitement is the horses, but it’s also the way people respond to them and being here together,” the official said. “That family, food and fun experience is what we want to present at Fonner Park.” Behind the scenes, trainers have been preparing horses for months, often starting before sunrise and working through all weather conditions. “We put in a lot of hours,” trainer Kinsey Gaedy said. “We train every day — conditioning, grooming, hoof care. We spend more time on these horses than we do ourselves.” Gaedy said race day brings a payoff for that work. “It’s exciting. The adrenaline is the main part of it,” Gaedy said. “There’s nothing like it when your horse wins or runs well.” Fonner Park enters its 73rd year of racing this season as Nebraska’s horse racing industry continues to evolve alongside new entertainment and gaming options across the state. The 2026 season opens Saturday in Grand Island.
