GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Grand Island’s new collegiate summer baseball team officially has a name.

Club officials announced Thursday the team will be known as the Fightin’ Cranes, with the inaugural season set to begin in May.

The Fightin’ Cranes will compete in the newly formed Diamond Baseball League, a six-team circuit featuring clubs in Grand Island, Hastings, Kansas, Missouri and more. The league’s sixth team has not yet been announced.

The team’s name was selected through a fan vote. The name pays tribute to the sandhill cranes.

The Fightin’ Cranes’ roster will be made up of active college baseball players looking to compete during their summer break.

Home games will be played at Ryder Park, which is currently undergoing renovations in preparation for the team’s debut.

More information on the team’s schedule and ticket sales is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
