GIBBON, Neb. — Gibbon has new leadership following Leon Stall's resignation as mayor last week.

Voters were set to decide whether to remove him from office in a January recall election — a committee gathered over 240 signatures needed to force the vote, prompting the Buffalo County Election Commissioner to set the election date for January 13.

Instead of facing that vote, Stall submitted his resignation, saying the city is “well-positioned to move forward” under new leadership.

Under Gibbon’s succession rules, City Council President Derrick Clevenger automatically became mayor during Monday night’s city council meeting.

Clevenger quickly filled the open Ward 1 council seat by appointing Brandon Brueggemann.

Kevin Kraenow has been appointed as the new city council president.

Clevenger said he’s ready to step into the role and work with a council that brings “fresh eyes and an unbiased perspective.”

He says the city’s immediate priorities include stabilizing operations and moving forward with long-term projects, including wastewater upgrades and ongoing improvement plans.

The next Gibbon City Council meeting is set for December 15.
