HASTINGS, Neb. — Hastings College marked a major milestone Tuesday as crews placed the final structural beam on "The 1882," a new suite-style student housing facility set to open next fall for students.

The project is named after the year the college was founded, and will become the largest residence hall on campus and the first new housing for first-year students in more than 30 years.

“This is a transition moment for Hastings College,” said school President Rich Lloyd. “The 1882 honors our past while forecasting a flourishing future for our students.”

Dean of Enrollment Traci Boeve, who has worked at the college for three decades, said the new housing will be a major draw for incoming students.

“We’re offering first-year students the opportunity to have private bedrooms while still living in a community setting,” said Boeve. “It’s something we’ve never had before at Hastings College.”

Each suite will feature four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, and shared living areas, along with study rooms, a fitness space, and a large lobby designed for student connection.

The project is part of a multi-year effort to upgrade on-campus housing and dining facilities, including renovations to Bronco Village Apartments.

President Lloyd said the goal is to create a “one campus, one community” experience that strengthens both learning and belonging.

“We know students learn in and out of the classroom,” said Lloyd. “This space is designed to foster collaboration, teamwork, and innovation."

Construction will continue through the spring and summer, with students expected to move in ahead of the fall 2026 semester.

College officials say demand is already high for the new dorm, with students already putting in applications for the chance to live there.
