HASTINGS, Neb. – A Hastings home is unlivable and its homeowner recovering from injuries after the house caught fire early Wednesday.

A city news release says Hastings Fire and Rescue responded to a structure fire around 5:50 a.m. at 1518 W 7th St.

Officials say the lone occupant of the house was an adult man, who exited the home on his own, but sustained minor injuries.

According to the news release, the fire was unintentional and was caused by combustible materials too close to a stove top.

The fire was contained in the kitchen, but the structure sustained heat and smoke damage as a result of the fire.

HFR got the fire under control in about five minutes after arriving.

As of Wednesday afternoon, The American Red Cross was working to find housing for the resident of the fire-damaged home.

Officials say the home did not have any working smoke alarms, and Hastings Fire & Rescue is reminding the public to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in homes.
