Three teens arrested after crash puts woman in coma

HASTINGS, Neb. -- 

More than two months after putting a woman in a coma because of reckless driving, three teens have been arrested in Adams County.

On the night of May 2, three teens were driving down W. 2nd St. in Hastings at what officers believe was 15 to 20 miles an hour over the 30 miles per hour speed limit, according to court records.

The Hastings police officer writing the accident report says two of the teenage drivers in pickups were involved in a crash where they hit one another on the side.

One truck careened into a house in the 1700 block, and the other truck struck a minivan driven by Jelena Bozic Skinner with her 12-year-old son inside, the records show.

According to follow-ups from the officer, Bozic Skinner suffered a variety of injuries including a brain bleed, and doctors say she will likely remain in a comatose state for the rest of her life.

The child had a broken leg and a gash to his forehead from the crash.

The third offender was driving ahead of the collisions and is also being charged in connection to the crash.

18-year-old Gregory Stroot, of Juniata, 17-year-old Beckett Shafer, of Hastings, and 17-year-old Tanner Graf, of Hastings, each face a pair of 2nd degree assault felonies and two driving misdemeanors.

Stroot is due back in court Friday at 9 a.m.

Shafer and Graf will have preliminary hearings in August.
