KEARNEY, Neb. — Two people are safe after jumping from a roof to avoid a house fire in Kearney.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 520 W 25th St. at 11:45 Monday night. A news release says the initial call reported that the residents were trapped on the roof. Officials say the occupants had jumped from the roof and were safe by the time firefighters arrived.

According to the release, firefighters had the fire under control in about 45 minutes. The flames also damaged a neighboring house.

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s initial investigation showed the fire likely started because of the improper disposal of smoking materials. The full investigation is still in progress.

First responders evaluated the residents for minor injuries. Neither required transportation to a hospital.

35 firefighters responded and used two fire engines, one aerial truck and a rehab vehicle. Kearney Police, the Nebraska State Patrol, CHI Good Samaritan EMS, Northwestern Energy and Nebraska Public Power District assisted at the scene.
