More snow, extreme wind chills expected to start week

HASTINGS, Neb. - Winter weather appears poised to again create dangerous conditions in Nebraska.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for 41 counties starting overnight and lasting into the evening on Monday. Forecasters say parts of the Sandhills could see five inches of snow on Monday. The Tri-Cities region is expected to get 2-4 inches. Accumulations are predicted drop to an inch or two the closer you get to the Kansas border.

The winter storm will likely bring wind gusts of 5-20 mph and road conditions could be slippery.

When the advisory expires, it will be replaced by an Extreme Cold Watch, which will last through noon on Thursday. The watch is in effect for roughly the eastern half of the state. Forecasters with the NWS warn that wind chills will dip as low as -15 to -30. The extreme cold can lead to frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes and could cause ruptured water pipes.
