HASTINGS, Neb. — A nearly record-setting dry spell is worsening drought conditions in central Nebraska.

The National Weather Service says the month of September was one of the five driest on record for each of the Tri-Cities. Kearney was the worst, recording just seven-hundredths of rain, the second-lowest total ever.

Forecasters expect drought conditions to persist or worsen in October and contribute to increased fire concerns.
