KEARNEY, Neb. — The shape of the new Miles Field complex at Kearney Catholic is starting to take form.

The school broke ground on the $6.8 million renovation project in November. Construction crews have removed the trees on the north side, dismantled the bleachers and mapped out the new eight-lane track.

Principal Matt Rogers said on The Doug & Daddy Show on ESPN Tri-Cities that he looks forward to have a facility that’s representative of Kearney Catholic’s success.

“All the work that the athletes and performers have put out, our coaches, all that," Rogers said. "We’re excited to have a facility that’s actually going to match that and match what’s going on in our school, too.”

Rogers expects crews to pour concrete for the track next week.

He says the wet spring set construction back slightly. He is working out details to play the Stars’ first home football game at UNK and hopes to have the new field ready for the team’s second home game on Sep. 20.

The Kearney Catholic Foundation is still looking to raise $1.9 million to pay for the project in full.

Rogers also announced that the school plans to include a Holy Family prayer garden by the entrance to the complex. It will include a seven-foot sculpture of the Holy Family.

“It symbolizes the past work that our families have put into that space and hopefully the future celebrations that will take place on that field," Rogers said. "It just celebrates family and celebrates the spirit of Kearney Catholic.”
