NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - A Cozad man faces two counts of felony child abuse charges after police said he seriously injured a two-month-old.

According to officials, 23-year-old Draven Haynes is charged with causing intentional child abuse resulting in injury.

According to an arrest affidavit, Cozad police responded to the 200 block of A Avenue last Wednesday in reference to an unresponsive infant. When officers arrived, they said Haynes told them the infant rolled off a bed. While there police say the infant went into cardiac arrest and was placed on a breathing machine.

A CT scan later determined the infant had brain bleeding, broken ribs and burn marks and was transported to Children’s Hospital in Omaha.

Court documents also show Haynes was taken to the hospital the following day for an attempted overdose and confessed to officers that he intentionally slammed the baby to the ground while it was crying.

Haynes is lodged in the Dawson County Jail on a $500,000 bond at 10%. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 26 at 9 a.m..

As of Friday, the infant was in critical condition with injuries that ‘may not be survivable’ according to staff at Children’s.
