GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A Central Nebraska sheriff is leaving law enforcement to manage a shooting park.

Hornady announced Monday that Howard County Sheriff Tom Busch will be the next Heartland Public Shooting Park manager. The ammunition manufacturing company took over operation of the shooting park from the City of Grand Island last week.

“Tom is extremely passionate about the shooting sports and possesses excellent leadership skills and a high level of organizational capability,” Hornady Marketing Director Neil Davies said in a statement. “In addition, he has a deep personal connection with the shooting park having served the facility as a volunteer for over a decade.”

Busch has over 25 years of experience in professional shooting and marksmanship training in the law enforcement and civilian fields. Before law enforcement, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and logged multiple combat deployments to Iraq.

Howard County is north of Grand Island and includes the city of St. Paul. The county board will need to appoint an interim sheriff to replace Busch. The sheriff told our news partners KSNB Local 4 that he will resign this week.
