Child custody dispute leads Kearney schools to enter ‘secure’ status
KEARNEY, Neb. — Things are back to normal at a pair of Kearney schools after a child custody dispute forced them to enter a security protocol Monday morning.
Kearney Police say Meadowlark Elementary received a phone message related to a child custody dispute around 8:30. As a precautionary step, the district placed Meadowlark and Sunrise Middle School in secure status, which is used when a concern or safety risk exists outside the school building. It means classes continue but no visitors are allowed to enter.
According to a news release, police made contact with the person involved in the phone message and determined there was no threat. The schools were released from secure status around 10:25.
