GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Central Community College is keeping a Mexican tradition alive for the next generations.

CCC has celebrated the "Day of the Dead," or "Dia de los Muertos."

For CCC workers Maria Lopez and Maria Flores, it’s important to share the meaning of this tradition to the community.

“It’s important because for us, roots are important. I’m first generation but my children were born here," Maria Lopez said. "But this is a tradition that we learned from our parents and I would like for my children and the children of my children to know about it and celebrate.”

Every year on Nov. 2, Mexicans gather to celebrate and remember loved ones who have passed away. They put photos of the deceased, their favorite foods, flowers, and other offerings on altars.

Similar to the tradition, at CCC the day is filled with activities for children and adults including face painting, altars, food trucks and a bilingual story. This year, the Omaha dance group Raices de Mexico came to perform.

“For me, it takes me back to my town back in Mexico. I hear the bells and see the dance, hear the drums, and it transports me to where I’m from. And it’s so beautiful it fills my heart with joy and that’s why we’re here,” Maria Flores said.
