The Hastings City Council successfully voted to move future meetings to a new location, as well as beginning plans to renovate the city hall. On Monday night, the council voted unanimously in a 8-0 decision to move meetings from the public library to the Hastings Municipal Airport.
The vote follows months of work from staff to move furniture and technology to the airport in order for it to accommodate the council.
The airport will now host council meetings until the renovation of city hall is complete.
The council had been meeting at the library since July 10.
The 8-person council also voted to approve asbestos removal at the city hall building.
Crews will soon begin removing asbestos from the Hastings city hall building as one of the first tasks in the renovation of the building. The bid came in about $100,000 under the architect’s estimate. Asbestos removal could begin in the coming days and is expected to be completed in January.
The city council voted 8-0 Monday night to approve an agreement with Great Plains Asbestos Control of Kearney for just over $200,000. The agreement tasks the company with removing asbestos and any visible mold. The city will seek the total elimination of mold in the building later in the renovation process.
