Hastings City Council votes 5-3 to move meetings to public library
HASTINGS, Neb. — The next time the Hastings City Council meets, it will be in a different building.
With one member absent Monday night, Mayor Corey Stutte cast the decisive vote to make it 5-3 in favor of relocating council meetings to the Hastings Public Library. He did the same for relocating council work sessions to the library.
The venue change comes on the heels of a mold study that found high levels of mold in city hall. The results have led all city staffers to move to different office buildings. The council is expected to decide if it renovates or demolishes and rebuilds city hall in the coming meetings.
At Monday’s meeting, city administrator Shawn Metcalf said the city will recommend moving meetings to the airport shortly after the change to the library. While the council meets at the library, staff will move furniture and technology to the airport.
Marc Rowan, Brad Consbruck and Steve Huntley voted against the moves. They expressed concern about the meeting space being on the second floor of the library and that the relocation could influence the vote on the future of city hall.
