Register for the adaptive Easter egg hunt

KEARNEY, Neb. — In honor of Disabilities Awareness Month, The Arc of Buffalo County has packed March with activities.

The Kearney-based non-profit provides programming and advocacy for people with developmental disabilities. This Saturday, The Arc is hosting an adaptive Easter egg hunt at Schrock Medical Clinic.

“The eggs are a little bit less hidden, they’re going to make sure everybody gets some treats," Vice President of the Board Jordan Squiers said. "The YMCA will partner with us and have some activities there for our participants as well as the Down Syndrome Advocates In Action group.”

On Tuesday, March 28th, the group is showing the new movie "Champions" starring Woody Harrelson at the World Theatre. Board Vice President Jordan Squiers says The Arc secured 14 sponsors to pay to offer the new release about a fictional Special Olympics team for free. Locals can make a freewill donation.

“For our participants, it’s really just something fun," Squiers said. "We don’t really want them to have to think about where the money comes from and where some of that back end stuff. For ourselves and the Kearney Special Olympics, if we can raise some money, that will really help go a long way as far as programming.”

The showing will have additional accessible seating, staff will keep the lights a little brighter and understand if some viewers need breaks or make some noise.

Beyond the special events, The Arc also has a recurring female fitness class, an art class and buddy bowling before the end of Disabilities Awareness Month.

“Just think about how you, or your family or your business can put yourselves around these people. It’s helpful to them, but I promise you, you’re going to come away with a lot from it as well,” Squiers said.
