HASTINGS, NE — Elementary students at St. Michael’s School in Hastings are being charitable during Catholic Schools week.
The fourth and fifth grade students spent Tuesday morning assembling and packing meals at Hearts and Hands Against Hunger. Kindergarten through third grade students packed lunches for Catholic Social Services.
Fourth grade teacher Marg Noecker says it’s a fun and meaningful experience.
“They love it. They love getting on the bus, going somewhere," Noecker said. "But they especially love helping others. They have a real spiritual side and they know the meaning of it.”
The volunteer effort fits in with what teachers and administrators hope Catholic Schools Week is about.
“Giving back to others as a sign of gratitude to God for what they’ve received and to help them appreciate that they have a Catholic school to attend,” Noecker said.
The meals packed at Hearts and Hands Against Hunger will be given to Orphan Grain Train to distribute. The students packed at least 15,000 meals that will end up in the hands of hungry children abroad.
Hastings Catholic Schools has activities every day for Catholic Schools Week. Bishop James Conley will visit St. Michael’s on Friday.
