GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Central Nebraska Health officials are sounding the alarm about a significant increase in sexually transmitted infections (STI's).

According to a news release, the Central District Health Department recorded more than 440 cases in Hall, Hamilton and Merrick Counties.

Disease contact investigator at CDHD, Gabriela Ochoa, said that number is well past the number they encountered last year.

“We are trying to release these press statements, we recently had a marketing campaign, because we really  want people to know that STI’s are in our district,” Ochoa said.

Health officials are concerned about the young demographic. Over half of the new cases seen in the past year range from ages 15-24 years.

Chlamydia remains the highest STI, accounting for over 300 cases, officials say.

Ochoa said that the best way to avoid spreading STI’s is to abstain from sexual activity, know your partner and get regular checks.
