KEARNEY, NE — A Nebraska non-profit is working to address diaper need in Central Nebraska.

The Nebraska Diaper Bank opened a Diaper Depot in Kearney on Wednesday. The Omaha-based charity drove a 20-foot truck full of 50,000 diapers to stock the new depot. Families who demonstrate financial need can be referred to receive free diapers by the Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska and Bright Futures Preschool.

Executive Director Tegan Reed says the Diaper Bank allows low-income families to have one less thing to worry about.

“If they’re struggling with food insecurity even, that family is going to need diapers for their little ones too. There’s a lot of health implications for the little one if they’re sitting in a diaper for too long. There’s a lot of mental health implications for the mom and the dad and the whole household to have a child that you can’t meet their basic needs.”

The Kearney Diaper Depot is housed inside the Healthy Blue welcome room (2714 2nd Ave. Ste. 1). Staff plans to host a distribution event every month to get diapers to families in need. The next distribution event is on September 20.
