GRAND ISLAND, NE — Some Grand Island Public Schools staff members will be getting a pay increase after the school district and the union representing its teachers agreed to a settlement that ends pending litigation.

GIPS and the Grand Island Education Association announced the agreement in a joint news release on Friday. The GIPS Board of Education voted unanimously at its meeting on Thursday to approve the agreement. Neither of the two groups have released the terms of the agreement.

Our news partners KSNB Local 4 report the complaint filed in January with the Nebraska Commission of Industrial Relations accused the district of paying certain teachers as substitutes when they should have been paid as full-time employees.

The news release says the two parties had “meaningful conversations” over the summer on the way to reaching the settlement. It says staff members affected by the agreement will receive notice of additional compensation for the past school year.

Separately on Thursday, the school board approved a $5 increase to the daily pay for substitute teachers. The substitute base rate was $149 per day.
