KEARNEY, NE — The City of Kearney is encouraging people to donate to help its sister city handle an influx of refugees from Ukraine.

Kearney is sister cities with Opava, a city of 56,000 on the eastern edge of the Czech Republic. The Opava mayor told Kearney leaders the city is receiving hundreds of Ukranian refugees daily. The mayor says officials are providing accommodations for the refugees but it is straining their local resources.

In response, the Kearney sister city team is coordinating relief efforts through the Kearney Area Community Foundation. You can make online donations here. Donations can be dropped off in person during office hours, or mailed to, Kearney Sister City Opava - Help Ukraine Fund, c/o Kearney Area Community Foundation, 412 W. 48th Street #12, Kearney, NE 68845. Gift receipts will be sent for donations of $250 or larger. Contact KACF at 308-237-3114 if you want to make a gift of appreciated stock or a distribution from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA).

All contributions will be sent to the Mayor of Opava to help provide accommodations, food, medical care and necessities.
