Rare collection of video games in Nebraska could be worth a fortune
Recently, Nebraska became the center of the video game universe after a rare collection of factory-sealed games were discovered that may just be a once in a lifetime find.
LINCOLN - Much like any collectable the notoriety and condition of that specific item plays a part in how much it's worth. When it comes to video games, if it's in immaculate condition and factory-sealed, it could be worth thousands of dollars.
Recently, Nebraska became the center of the video game universe after a rare collection of factory-sealed games were discovered that may just be a once in a lifetime find.
"This kind of stuff is hunted to extinction!"
Meet Chris Thompson, Owner of Gameroom, and liaison for the anonymous individuals who own the video game collection, that had been in storage and untouched for more than two decades.
After the collection was brought to his attention late last year, Thompson quickly realized that this was a treasure that video game collectors all over the world would want to get their hands on.
"The first thing that happened was people that were known participants in the collecting community started giving me phone calls. I got a lot of 'Oh, I just want this one game, or I want these games, or I can bring a briefcase full of cash...'"
Thompson, who has been in the video game business for 15 years, says the collection, if sold, could easily exceed the six-figure mark with several games within it having an estimated value of more than $100,000.
"I've seen traffic on the analytics of my website coming from Brazil, and Spain, and all over the world. So inevitably everybody is talking about this."
While the excitement is swirling around the collection which includes rare titles like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, Sunset Riders, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, Thompson says the journey is just beginning.
"We need to preserve the history here. We really need to take this process step by step...We have not conducted a full investigation, we have not talked to every expert, and honestly we haven't documented exactly what's there yet. So that's what's on the docket for what's to come."
Thompson says he will be sending out press releases in the near future and posting video updates on Gameroom's YouTube page.
Now while there are a lot of moving parts to this video game story, there's one thing or sure, that this saga is far from over.
