Keith County Fairgrounds becomes Incident Command Post amid Nebraska wildfires

OGALLALA, Neb. — As wildfires continue to burn across central Nebraska, emergency officials have established a large incident command post at the Keith County Fairgrounds in Ogallala to coordinate firefighting efforts.

Officials say the post allows crews to manage resources, monitor fire activity, and protect communities across the region.

Roughly 400 personnel from 150 fire departments and 25 other agencies are currently involved, representing both local and out-of-state teams.

“Most teams have an incident commander, we’ve got finance, operations, logistics, plans, safety and public information,” said Section 1 Chief Keith Plagemann. “It does require an awful lot to support our folks that come in from the local area as well as out of state to do this hard work.”

The centralized setup ensures both firefighter safety and the protection of homes, power lines, and critical infrastructure.

Volunteers from local fire departments, many of whom balance firefighting with full-time jobs and family responsibilities, benefit from the additional support provided by the command post.

“When we come in, we recognize that communities we’re supporting have limited resources, and we want to help strengthen those resources,” said Safety Officer Todd Legler. “When we bring in hundreds of firefighters, we bring our own medical shop, EMTs, ambulances, low-angle rescue folks to help relieve some of that burden.”

The command post effectively acts as a small town, coordinating personnel, equipment, and logistics for one of the largest wildfire responses in recent Nebraska history.

Officials say it will continue operating in Ogallala as long as needed to monitor conditions, reinforce containment lines, and protect residents.
