GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A Grand Island family is out of their home after a fire broke out early Friday morning.

Just before 3:45 a.m., Grand Island Fire & Rescue responded to a call of a structure fire to a single family home in the 1100 block of W. John.

When crews arrived on scene, the deck and backside of the house was on fire.

Two adults and three children were able to get out of the home before firefighters arrived on scene. Nobody was injured.

GIFD Division Chief Tim Hiemer said it was actually one of the children who woke up and notified the rest of the family about the fire. He said the smoke alarms had yet to go off because there was no smoke yet for them to detect.

“The house is not livable at this time,” Hiemer said.

The Red Cross was called out to assist the occupants of the home.

Hiemer said the cause of the fire was improper discarding of smoking materials. Preliminary estimates to the structure for damage is $30,000.
