Omaha City Council hears public debate on mask mandate
The mask mandate for Nebraska's largest city is set to expire later this month, but could be extended further despite protestations from some community members Monday.
OMAHA, Neb. -- The mask mandate for Nebraska's largest city is set to expire later this month, but could be extended further despite protestations from some community members Monday, in addition to complaints from people from outside Omaha.
The Omaha City Council heard public comments about the ordinance Tuesday, which is set to expire on February 23rd. Discussions revolved around possibly extending the ordinance through May.
UNMC Death of Public Health Dr. Ali Khan supported the extension, utilizing data that showed the potential for a decrease in cases if masks are continued to be worn.
"Wearing a mask is a patriotic thing to do to save your citizens," Khan said.
Opponents argued that the mandate is against their constitutional rights, and that it is driving business out of the Omaha area.
The City Council will decide next week whether or not Omaha will be keeping its ordinance.
