Mitchell Police Chief Michael Cotant is retiring from his position after almost ten years and his advice to his successor Sergeant Mandy Murphy is to be prepared for anything.
By News Channel NebraskaSCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - Mitchell Police Chief Michael Cotant is retiring from his position after almost ten years and his advice to his successor Sergeant Mandy Murphy is to be prepared for anything.
“I told her be ready for anything because there is stuff everyday that you’ll never see,” said Cotant. “You will be getting calls to a death maybe. You maybe getting calls for domestic disturbances since this COVID-19 we seen a rise of the domestic assaults going on.”
Cotant reflects on what he is proud of during his tenure as police chief which is adding excellent personnel to the force and upgrading equipment.
“I think the biggest thing is hiring good quality people, and I am not saying the old ones are ok but it’s just been fantastic can’t say anymore,” said Cotant.
Cotant said the police department emphasized on having a good relationship with the community.
“My officers are great with the citizens here and we try to work with them instead beating them up giving them tickets for this and that,” said Cotant. “It’s a lot easier to work with people I think you get a lot more accomplished and cleaning up our town. That was one of the big deals.”
Cotant said he will miss serving the people of Mitchell. Sergeant Mandy Murphy will take over as interim in April.
“The City of Mitchell is a great place to work can’t complain the citizens are wonderful,” said Cotant. “The citizens will back you 100 percent it’s good to work with the community.”
