Columbus, Ohio – Bolstered by a strong performance in the smallbore, the Nebraska rifle team opened its 2021 campaign with a 4,670-4,658 victory over Ohio State on Saturday.  Nebraska's team score was its highest in a season opener since the 2005-06 campaign.

"Our first match of the season highlighted some areas that we need to hit hard in training, but also showed the amount of grit and mental toughness these six athletes have," said Rifle Coach Rachel Martin. "Having not competed since last February, there were many obstacles. But I'm very happy with the work ethic my athletes displayed on the range today, and it was rewarded with a solid Smallbore performance."

The Huskers, in their first competitive action since the 2020 Great American Rifle Conference championship, swept the top three places in the Smallbore. Senior Emily Cheramie shot a 581 to take top honors, to edge out freshman Cecelia Ossi (579) and All-America Elena Flake (578). Freshman Madelynn Erickson rounded out the scoring lineup with a 574, as NU bested the Buckeyes, 2,312-2,296 in the event.

Cheramie was also the Huskers' top finisher in the Air Rifle, finishing second with a score of 593. Erickson finished fourth with a score of 591, while Ossi (588) and Flake (587) rounded out the lineup, as OSU edged the Huskers, 2,362-2,358 in the event.

The Huskers will continue their busy weekend on Sunday, as Nebraska will face Ole Miss in Columbus at 7 a.m.
