NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -On Dec. 21, the city council members brainstormed various COVID-related ideas and what would be best for the community. Many members shared their opinions on education, personal responsibility and personal freedoms, and leadership all surrounding the coronavirus.

The council members tossed the ideas about a mask-mandate or other measures. However, many council members opposed the idea and emphasized the importance of COVID-19 education.

Pastor William Reeves from the North Platte Baptist Church spoke about the impact the global health pandemic has had at his church. He explained how he has implemented CDC guidelines and sanitizing stations, but his main reason for addressing the council was to speak on the importance of citizenship and unity in the North Platte community during COVID-19.

One council member spoke about the education people are receiving about COVID-19 and spoke about data-driven education versus emotional-based education.

All items discussed in the meeting were ideas and nothing has been voted on or put in motion.

All members of the council silently agreed on the notion that they are all working together to find solutions to better navigate the residents of North Platte.

“We owe it to the residents of North Platte to discuss this,” said Mayor Brandon Kelliher. “Should we do something? Should we pass an ordinance? Should we pass a resolution? Should we maintain the status quo? What should we do? "

Additional items on the agenda focused on maintaining the order during council meetings and committee meetings.
