CLAY COUNTY, Neb. — A GoFundMe page has raised over $30,000 for a family near Sutton whose farm equipment went up in a series of blazes late last week.
The fire occurred early Thursday morning on the farm of Jonathan Rempel. A Facebook post by Rempel noted that the family lost a combine, two trucks and trailers filled with grain, a tractor and grain cart. About an acre and a half of a nearby corn field was also burned, but there were no injuries.
A press release from the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office confirmed the damage and said that the fire is under investigation.
On Facebook, Rempel described the location of the fire as a ‘very rural area’, two miles off the two-lane highway. Rempel’s post focused on the support he and his family received from the surrounding communities, but many of the nearly 7,000 people who shared the post made accusations of arson and political motivation. Rempel avoided making a political connection in his post, though he did confirm that two flags supporting President Donald Trump were on his combine.
No official estimate has been made regarding the cost of damage, though the GoFundMe page in support of the Rempels has listed a goal of $50,000.
Friends of the Rempels said they are planning a harvest bee to help following the loss.
