GRAND ISLAND - Merrick County authorities say a car versus semi-trailer crash claimed the life of a Columbus man.

The Merrick County Sheriff's Office says the crash was reported around noon on Monday around three miles west of Chapman on Highway 30.

Authorities say a car was driving westbound when it crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound semi-truck.

The driver of the car, 38-year-old Timothy Silva of Columbus, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say Silva was not wearing a seat-belt.

The semi-driver suffered minor injuries and is being treated at a Lincoln hospital.

Authorities say alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor to the crash.
