OGALLALA - The Memorial Day weekend for people in western and central Nebraska could start with rumbles of thunder and severe weather, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists say the region is looking at a "slight risk" for severe thunderstorms to develop over portions of southeastern Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle Saturday afternoon and evening. The storms will evolve along and ahead of a surface front, especially after 2 p.m.

The main hazards associated with the possible storm development this afternoon are expected to be damaging wind gusts, up to ping pong ball size hail, frequent lightning and a tornado or two, according to the NWS.

"People across southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska are encouraged to remain alert this afternoon and evening to the possibility of strong to severe storms developing and quickly changing conditions."

Thunderstorms will weaken later into the evening.

Saturday's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a high of 78 and a low of 46.
