FAIRBURY - The Fairbury Rural Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from an apartment at 401 1/2 5th Street in downtown Fairbury on Friday.  When firefighters made entry they discovered the fire had essentially burned itself out.

Firefighters were able to fully extinguish the parts that were still smoldering using water from the residence faucet, preventing any more damage.

Barry Schwab with the Fairbury Rural Volunteer Fire Department said there was a fair amount of charring on the wall and ceiling but no real structural damage.

The fire is believed to have started by an open flame, such as a candle sitting on a window ledge of the apartment bathroom.

Emergency vehicles were on the scene for about an hour total extinguishing, ventilating the apartments, and completing the post fire investigation.
